5편. 영웅인가, 간웅인가 — 조조의 성장과 사람을 알아보는 눈

삼국지에서 가장 복잡한 인물을 꼽으라면 단연 **조조(曹操)**예요. 누군가에게는 난세를 평정한 영웅이고, 누군가에게는 황제를 허수아비로 만든 간신이죠. 실제로 조조 본인도 이런 말을 남겼다고 해요.

"나를 영웅이라 부르든, 간웅이라 부르든 — 난세에 내가 없었다면 천하가 어찌 됐을지 모른다."

오만한 말 같지만, 틀린 말도 아니에요. 조조가 없었다면 삼국지는 전혀 다른 이야기가 됐을 테니까요.

조조는 어떤 집안 출신이었을까

조조는 152년, 지금의 안휘성 일대에서 태어났어요. 아버지는 환관의 양자였는데, 덕분에 조조는 꽤 좋은 환경에서 자랐습니다. 어릴 때부터 총명했고, 병법과 문학 모두에 뛰어났어요. 실제로 조조는 훌륭한 시인이기도 했는데, 그가 남긴 시들은 지금도 중국 문학사에서 높이 평가받아요.

하지만 환관의 후손이라는 출신 배경은 당시 귀족 사회에서 약점이기도 했어요. 조조는 이 약점을 실력으로 극복하려 했고, 그 과정에서 누구보다 냉철하고 현실적인 인간이 됩니다.

동탁 암살 시도 — 조조의 첫 번째 도박

동탁이 낙양을 장악하고 폭정을 펼치던 시절, 조조는 동탁의 신임을 얻어 그 곁에 머물고 있었어요. 그러다 단독으로 동탁을 암살하려는 계획을 세웁니다. 칠성보도(七星寶刀)라는 명검을 들고 동탁의 침소에 잠입하죠.

그런데 결정적인 순간, 동탁이 거울을 통해 조조의 움직임을 눈치챕니다. 조조는 순간적인 기지로 "명검을 바치러 왔습니다"라고 둘러대고 간신히 탈출해요. 이후 조조는 낙양을 빠져나와 고향으로 돌아가 스스로 군대를 모으기 시작합니다. 위험천만한 도박이었지만, 이게 조조가 천하를 향해 내딛는 첫걸음이 됩니다.

영웅을 알아보는 눈

조조의 가장 큰 능력 중 하나는 인재를 알아보는 눈이었어요. 출신이나 신분을 따지지 않고, 능력 있는 사람이라면 적극적으로 끌어들였죠. 적군 출신이어도 상관없었어요. 심지어 자신을 비판하는 글을 쓴 사람도 "이런 글재주는 써먹어야 한다"며 곁에 뒀을 정도였습니다.

이 시기 조조 주변에 모인 인재들을 보면 정말 화려해요. 모사로는 순욱(荀彧), 곽가(郭嘉), 무장으로는 하후돈(夏侯惇), 전위(典韋) 등이 있었죠. 이들이 있었기에 조조는 빠르게 세력을 키울 수 있었습니다.

조조와 유비 — 영웅은 영웅을 알아본다

조조는 유비를 일찌감치 알아봤어요. 한번은 유비와 단둘이 매실주를 마시며 이런 말을 했다고 해요.

"지금 천하의 영웅은 오직 그대와 나, 둘뿐이오."

칭찬인지 경고인지 모를 이 한마디에, 유비는 깜짝 놀라 들고 있던 젓가락을 떨어뜨렸다고 해요. 자신의 속내를 들킨 것 같아서였죠. 조조는 그걸 보고 웃으며 넘어갔지만, 이 순간 두 사람이 언젠가 정면으로 부딪힐 운명이라는 게 암시되는 장면이에요.

조조는 악당이었을까

조조를 단순히 악당으로 보기는 어려워요. 그는 분명 잔인한 면도 있었어요. 원한이 있는 집안을 몰살시키거나, 의심이 가는 사람을 미리 제거하는 냉혹함도 있었죠. 하지만 동시에, 그는 백성들의 생활을 안정시키려 했고, 농업을 장려했으며, 인재라면 누구든 기용하는 열린 마인드를 가졌어요.

훗날 조조 자신이 남긴 말이 있어요.

"내가 천하를 저버릴지언정, 천하가 나를 저버리게 하지는 않겠다."

이 말 하나가 조조라는 인간의 본질을 잘 보여줘요. 냉혹하지만, 그 냉혹함은 살아남기 위한 것이었습니다. 난세에서 선한 사람이 살아남는 게 얼마나 어려운 일인지를 조조는 누구보다 잘 알고 있었던 거죠.

If there's one character in the Three Kingdoms who defies easy labels, it's Cao Cao (曹操). To some, he's the brilliant strongman who held a crumbling world together. To others, he's the cunning schemer who reduced the emperor to a puppet. Cao Cao himself is said to have put it this way:

"Call me a hero or call me a villain — but without me, who knows what would have become of this world."

Arrogant? Maybe. But also hard to argue with. Without Cao Cao, the Three Kingdoms story would be an entirely different one.

Where Did Cao Cao Come From?

Cao Cao was born in 152 AD in what is now Anhui province. His father had been adopted by a eunuch official, which meant Cao Cao grew up in relative comfort — but also with a social stigma attached to his family name. In the aristocratic circles of the Han Dynasty, being a eunuch's descendant was a mark against you, no matter how talented you were.

Cao Cao responded by outworking everyone around him. He was sharp from childhood — gifted in military strategy and literature alike. He actually became an accomplished poet, and his surviving works are still celebrated in Chinese literary history. But the world he was entering didn't reward poetry. It rewarded ruthlessness, and Cao Cao learned that lesson early.

The Assassination Attempt — Cao Cao's First Gamble

While Dong Zhuo was terrorizing Luoyang, Cao Cao had managed to gain a position close to him. Then he made a staggering decision: he would assassinate Dong Zhuo himself. He obtained a precious sword and slipped into Dong Zhuo's private chambers.

At the critical moment, Dong Zhuo happened to catch a glimpse of Cao Cao in a mirror — and Cao Cao's hand froze. In a flash of quick thinking, he dropped to one knee and announced he had come to present the sword as a gift. Dong Zhuo accepted the explanation, barely. Cao Cao walked out, fled Luoyang, and immediately began raising his own army back home.

It was an enormous gamble — and it became the first step toward everything that followed.

(This scene is dramatized vividly in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Historically, Cao Cao did break from Dong Zhuo and flee — but the specific details of an assassination attempt are largely the novel's embellishment.)

The Eye for Talent

One of Cao Cao's defining strengths was his ability to recognize talent regardless of where it came from. He didn't care about birth, background, or social rank. If someone was capable, he wanted them. He even kept critics and former enemies in his service — famously retaining a writer who had penned a vicious attack on him, on the grounds that such writing talent was too good to waste.

The roster of people Cao Cao gathered around him during this period is remarkable. On the strategy side: Xun Yu (荀彧) and Guo Jia (郭嘉), two of the sharpest minds of the age. On the battlefield: Xiahou Dun (夏侯惇) and Dian Wei (典韋), warriors of legendary capability. This team is a large part of how Cao Cao was able to grow so fast.

Cao Cao and Liu Bei — A Hero Recognizes a Hero

Cao Cao sized Liu Bei up early on. At one point, the two of them were drinking together — warm wine, plum blossoms, just the two of them — when Cao Cao said something that cut right to the bone:

"The only true heroes in this world today are you and I."

Compliment or warning — it was impossible to tell. Liu Bei was so startled that he dropped his chopsticks. He was afraid Cao Cao had seen straight through him. Cao Cao laughed it off — but the moment hangs in the air like a prophecy. These two men were always going to collide.

Was Cao Cao Actually a Villain?

It's too simple to call him one. He had a brutal streak, no question — he could order massacres and eliminations with cold efficiency when he felt it was necessary. But he also worked to stabilize the lives of ordinary people, encouraged agriculture, and genuinely welcomed talent from all walks of life.

He left behind a line that captures him better than most descriptions:

"I would rather betray the world than let the world betray me."

Chilling — but also honest. Cao Cao understood better than almost anyone that in a world this violent, kindness without power was just another way to die. He wasn't naive about the age he was living in, and he refused to pretend otherwise.

Closing

From this point on, Cao Cao systematically consolidates control over northern China, bringing one rival after another to heel. Conflict with Liu Bei and Sun Quan becomes inevitable. But while Cao Cao is building his empire in the north, another powerful family is quietly laying its own foundations in the south — along the Yangtze River.
