3편. 아버지를 두 번 버린 남자 — 여포의 배신과 동탁의 최후

삼국지에는 배신자가 많아요. 하지만 그중에서도 **여포(呂布)**는 단연 독보적입니다. 그는 단순히 주군을 배신한 게 아니라, 자신을 친아들처럼 아낀 두 명의 양아버지를 차례로 버렸거든요. 천하무적의 무력을 가졌지만, 그 무력만큼 신뢰를 잃은 인물 — 여포의 이야기를 시작합니다.

첫 번째 배신 — 정원을 죽이다

여포의 첫 주군은 **정원(丁原)**이었어요. 정원은 여포의 뛰어난 무예를 알아보고 그를 양자로 삼을 만큼 아꼈습니다. 여포도 정원 밑에서 충실히 일했죠. 그런데 동탁이 낙양에 들어오면서 상황이 바뀝니다.

동탁은 여포의 능력을 한눈에 알아봤어요. 그리고 슬쩍 유혹의 손길을 내밉니다. 명마 **적토마(赤兔馬)**와 금은보화를 내밀면서 "나한테 오면 이 모든 게 네 것"이라고 했죠. 여포의 고민은 오래가지 않았어요. 그는 양아버지 정원을 직접 죽이고 동탁에게 귀순합니다. 삼국지를 처음 접하는 사람도 이 장면에서 한 번쯤 입을 떡 벌리게 되죠.

동탁의 오른팔이 되다

동탁 밑에서 여포는 최강의 전력이었어요. 반동탁 연합군이 쳐들어와도 여포 혼자 막아낼 정도였으니까요. "사람 중엔 여포, 말 중엔 적토마(人中呂布, 馬中赤兎)" 라는 말이 괜히 나온 게 아니에요. 전쟁터에서 여포의 이름만 들어도 적군이 사기를 잃을 정도였습니다.

동탁은 여포를 극진히 대우했어요. 하지만 두 사람 사이에는 결정적인 균열이 생기게 됩니다. 바로 초선(貂蟬) 때문이었죠.

초선, 그리고 미인계

**왕윤(王允)**은 동탁을 제거하고 싶었지만 정면 승부는 불가능했어요. 여포라는 넘을 수 없는 벽이 있었으니까요. 그래서 왕윤이 택한 방법은 이간계였습니다. 도구는 자신의 수양딸 초선이었어요.

왕윤은 먼저 여포에게 초선을 소개시켜 줬어요. 두 사람은 급격히 가까워졌고, 여포는 초선을 아내로 맞이할 생각에 들떠 있었죠. 그런데 왕윤은 슬그머니 초선을 동탁에게도 바칩니다. 여포는 분노했고, 동탁은 의심하기 시작했어요. 한 여자를 사이에 두고 양부와 양자 사이에 돌이킬 수 없는 금이 가기 시작한 거죠.

(초선은 정사보다는 소설 삼국지연의에서 크게 부각된 인물이에요. 하지만 여포와 동탁 사이의 균열이 실제로 있었다는 건 역사적 사실이에요.)

두 번째 배신 — 동탁을 창으로 찌르다

192년, 왕윤의 계획이 실행됩니다. 여포는 궁궐 안에서 동탁을 직접 창으로 찔러 죽이죠. 권력의 정점에 있던 동탁의 최후치고는 너무나 허망했어요.

동탁의 시신은 길에 내버려졌는데, 역사 기록에는 충격적인 장면이 남아 있어요. 워낙 기름지게 먹고 살았던 탓에 시신에서 기름이 흘러나왔고, 누군가 배꼽에 꽂은 촛불이 며칠이나 꺼지지 않았다고 해요. 낙양 백성들은 환호했습니다. 그만큼 동탁의 폭정이 극심했다는 뜻이기도 하죠.

배신자의 결말은 또 다른 배신

동탁을 제거한 여포는 잠깐 영웅이 됐어요. 하지만 오래가지 않았습니다. 동탁의 부하들이 역으로 반격해오자, 여포는 왕윤을 버리고 장안에서 달아나버렸거든요. 자신을 믿고 모든 걸 걸었던 왕윤은 결국 붙잡혀 죽음을 맞이합니다.

두 명의 아버지를 버리고, 자신을 도운 은인까지 버린 여포. 그는 이후에도 떠돌이 신세로 이 군벌 저 군벌 사이를 전전하며 배신과 이용의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못합니다. 여포의 최후는 훗날 조조의 손에서 맞이하게 되는데, 그 이야기는 다음에 또 나올 거예요.

맺음말

동탁이 사라졌다고 혼란이 끝난 건 아니었어요. 오히려 권력의 공백이 생기면서 군벌들의 경쟁은 더 치열해졌습니다. 이제 무대의 중심은 조조·유비·손씨 일가로 서서히 옮겨갑니다. 그리고 이 모든 혼란 속에서, 세 남자가 복숭아나무 아래서 역사적인 약속을 나눕니다.

Episode 3. The Man Who Betrayed Two Fathers — Lü Bu's Treachery and Dong Zhuo's End

The Three Kingdoms is full of betrayals. But none quite like Lü Bu's (呂布). He didn't just turn on a master — he betrayed two men who had each taken him in as an adopted son. The greatest warrior in the land, and perhaps its greatest traitor. This is his story.

The First Betrayal — Killing Ding Yuan

Lü Bu's first master was Ding Yuan (丁原). Ding Yuan recognized Lü Bu's extraordinary talent and treated him like a son — he literally adopted him. For a while, Lü Bu served him loyally. Then Dong Zhuo arrived in Luoyang, and everything changed.

Dong Zhuo immediately saw what Lü Bu was worth. So he made his move. He offered Lü Bu the legendary warhorse Red Hare (赤兔馬) — the finest horse in the world — along with gold and treasures beyond measure. "Come to me," Dong Zhuo said, "and all of this is yours." Lü Bu didn't agonize over it for long. He killed his own adoptive father, Ding Yuan, and switched sides. It's the kind of scene that makes first-time readers of the Three Kingdoms do a double take.

Dong Zhuo's Unbeatable Right Hand

Under Dong Zhuo, Lü Bu became an unstoppable force on the battlefield. He held off the entire anti-Dong Zhuo coalition almost single-handedly. The famous saying "Among men, Lü Bu; among horses, Red Hare (人中呂布, 馬中赤兎)" wasn't just flattery — his name alone was enough to drain the morale out of an opposing army.

Dong Zhuo treated him well, and for a time the partnership worked. But then a crack appeared — and her name was Diaochan (貂蟬).

Diaochan and the Honeytrap

Wang Yun (王允) desperately wanted Dong Zhuo gone, but a direct confrontation was out of the question — not with Lü Bu standing in the way. So Wang Yun chose a different weapon: a scheme to drive the two men apart. His adopted daughter Diaochan was the key.

Wang Yun first introduced Diaochan to Lü Bu. The two grew close quickly, and Lü Bu was already imagining her as his wife. Then Wang Yun quietly offered Diaochan to Dong Zhuo as well. Lü Bu burned with rage. Dong Zhuo seethed with suspicion. A wedge had been driven between adoptive father and son — and it would never come out.

(Diaochan is more prominent in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms than in the historical record. But the real rift between Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo is well-documented history.)

The Second Betrayal — The Spear in Dong Zhuo's Chest

In 192 AD, Wang Yun's plan reached its conclusion. Lü Bu cornered Dong Zhuo inside the palace and ran him through with his spear. For a man who had terrorized the entire empire, the end came with almost pathetic swiftness.

Dong Zhuo's body was left in the street. The historical records include a grim detail: he had lived so lavishly and grown so fat that oil seeped from his corpse, and a candle someone stuck in his navel reportedly burned for days. The people of Luoyang celebrated in the streets. It says everything about how much they had suffered under him.

A Traitor's Reward Is More Betrayal

For a brief moment, Lü Bu was hailed as a hero. It didn't last. When Dong Zhuo's former lieutenants regrouped and struck back, Lü Bu fled Chang'an — abandoning Wang Yun, the very man whose plan he had carried out. Wang Yun was captured and killed.

Having betrayed two adoptive fathers and abandoned his ally, Lü Bu spent the next years drifting from warlord to warlord — always using people, always being used in return. His final reckoning would come at the hands of Cao Cao, but that's a story for later.

Closing

Dong Zhuo's death didn't end the chaos — if anything, the power vacuum made things worse. The stage was now slowly shifting toward Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and the Sun family. And in the middle of all this turbulence, three men gathered beneath a peach tree and made a promise that would echo through history.
