2편. 동탁이 황제를 인질로 삼다 — 낙양을 뒤덮은 공포

황건적의 난이 가라앉고, 한나라는 겨우 숨을 돌리는 것 같았어요. 하지만 진짜 악몽은 그다음에 찾아왔습니다. 반란을 진압하는 과정에서 힘을 키운 군벌들 중, 가장 먼저 수도 낙양을 장악한 인물이 나타났거든요. 그의 이름은 동탁(董卓). 삼국지에서 손꼽히는 악당이자, 난세의 문을 활짝 열어젖힌 장본인입니다.

서량에서 올라온 군벌

동탁은 원래 지금의 섬서성 일대인 서량 출신의 무장이었어요. 변방의 이민족과 싸우며 단련된 강한 군대를 거느리고 있었죠. 황건적의 난 이후 조정이 흔들리자, 그는 낙양으로 불려 올라옵니다. 명목상으로는 수도를 안정시키러 온 거였지만, 실상은 달랐어요. 동탁은 처음부터 권력을 노리고 있었습니다.

189년, 황제 영제가 죽고 어린 **헌제(獻帝)**가 즉위하자 동탁은 기다렸다는 듯 움직입니다. 환관 세력을 단숨에 숙청하고, 외척까지 제압하며 단숨에 낙양의 실권을 쥐어버렸죠. 황제는 있었지만, 나라는 이미 동탁의 것이었어요.

낙양을 피로 물들이다

동탁의 통치 방식은 한마디로 공포 그 자체였어요. 마음에 들지 않는 신하는 그 자리에서 처형했고, 황후를 폐위하고 독살했으며, 반대 목소리는 철저히 짓밟았습니다. 그의 군사들은 낙양 백성들을 약탈하고 괴롭혔어요. 한때 천하의 중심이었던 낙양이 공포의 도시로 변해버린 거죠.

이 시기 동탁의 오른팔은 바로 **여포(呂布)**였어요. 천하무적의 무력을 자랑하는 여포가 동탁의 경호와 전투를 맡으면서, 아무도 동탁에게 쉽게 대항하지 못했습니다.

반동탁 연합군의 등장

동탁의 폭정이 심해지자 지방 군벌들이 하나둘씩 들고일어납니다. **원소(袁紹)**를 맹주로 내세운 반동탁 연합군이 결성되고, 조조·손견·유비 등도 이 연합에 가담하죠. 드디어 천하의 영웅들이 한자리에 모이는 순간이에요.

하지만 연합군은 생각만큼 강하지 않았어요. 각자의 이해관계가 달랐고, 누가 앞장서서 싸울지를 놓고 서로 눈치만 봤죠. 그 와중에 손견이 분전하며 동탁군을 몰아붙였지만, 전체 전황을 뒤집기엔 역부족이었습니다.

결국 동탁은 수도를 통째로 버리는 초강수를 둡니다. 낙양을 직접 불태우고 황제를 데리고 장안으로 도망친 거예요. 수백 년 역사의 도시가 하룻밤 사이에 잿더미가 됐습니다. 황제는 말 그대로 인질이나 다름없었고, 연합군은 폐허만 된 낙양에 입성하는 처지가 됐죠.

이 사건은 단순한 수도 이전이 아니었어요. 한나라의 권위가 완전히 바닥으로 떨어졌다는 선언이나 마찬가지였습니다. 이제 천하는 누구든 힘 있는 자가 차지하는 시대로 접어들었어요.

Episode 2. Dong Zhuo Takes the Emperor Hostage — Fear Descends on Luoyang

After the Yellow Turban Rebellion was crushed, it seemed like the Han Dynasty might finally catch its breath. But the real nightmare was just getting started. Among the warlords who had built up their power during the chaos, one man moved faster than all the rest — and seized the capital, Luoyang, for himself. His name was Dong Zhuo (董卓). One of the greatest villains in the entire Three Kingdoms saga, and the man who threw open the gates of chaos.

The Warlord from the Western Frontier

Dong Zhuo was a military commander from Liang Province — roughly modern-day Shaanxi — a rugged frontier region where soldiers were hardened by constant battles against nomadic tribes. He commanded a powerful, battle-tested army. When the Han court started coming apart after the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he was summoned to Luoyang, ostensibly to help stabilize the capital. But that was never really his plan. Dong Zhuo had his eye on power from the very beginning.

In 189 AD, Emperor Ling died and the young Emperor Xian (獻帝) took the throne. Dong Zhuo saw his opening. He swiftly purged the eunuch faction, neutralized the court aristocracy, and seized control of Luoyang in one swift move. There was still an emperor on the throne — but the country already belonged to Dong Zhuo.

Luoyang Runs Red

Dong Zhuo's style of rule was, in a word, terror. Officials who displeased him were executed on the spot. The empress dowager was deposed and then poisoned. Any voice of opposition was crushed. His soldiers looted and terrorized the people of Luoyang. The city that had once been the center of the known world became a city of fear.

His right-hand man during all of this was Lü Bu (呂布) — the most feared warrior in the land. With Lü Bu handling his personal guard and battlefield command, nobody could easily move against Dong Zhuo.

The Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition

As Dong Zhuo's brutality mounted, warlords across the country started to stir. A coalition formed under the nominal leadership of Yuan Shao (袁紹), and figures like Cao Cao, Sun Jian, and Liu Bei all joined the cause. For the first time, the great heroes of the age were gathering in one place.

But the coalition turned out to be less impressive in practice than it looked on paper. Every warlord had their own agenda, and nobody was in a rush to be the one charging into Lü Bu's spear. Sun Jian fought hard and pushed Dong Zhuo's forces back at several points, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide on its own.

Burn It Down and Run

Dong Zhuo's response was a dramatic one — he decided to simply abandon the capital. He ordered Luoyang set on fire, took the emperor with him, and fled west to Chang'an. A city that had stood for centuries was reduced to ash in a single night. The emperor was, for all practical purposes, a hostage. And the coalition marched into nothing but rubble.

This wasn't just a change of capitals. It was a declaration that Han imperial authority was finished. The era of whoever-has-the-biggest-army-wins had officially begun.

Dong Zhuo was digging his own grave. He'd made too many enemies, and ruled too brutally for too long. Even his most trusted enforcer, Lü Bu, was quietly sharpening a knife in his heart. Dong Zhuo's time was running out — and the betrayal was already growing right beside him.
