12편. 천하의 목줄을 잡아라 — 한중 쟁탈전과 조조·유비의 정면 충돌

219년, 삼국지에서 가장 치열한 영토 전쟁 중 하나가 펼쳐집니다. 무대는 한중(漢中) — 지금의 섬서성 남부, 험준한 진령산맥과 파산산맥 사이에 끼어 있는 분지예요. 한중은 단순한 땅이 아니었어요. 북쪽으로는 조조의 위나라 심장부와 연결되고, 남쪽으로는 유비의 익주와 맞닿은 전략적 요충지였죠. 익주를 지키려면 한중이 있어야 했고, 한중을 잃으면 익주도 위험했어요. 유비와 조조 모두 이 땅을 포기할 수 없었습니다.

한중의 주인, 장로

한중 쟁탈전이 시작되기 전, 한중은 **장로(張魯)**라는 인물이 다스리고 있었어요. 장로는 도교 계통의 종교 집단인 **오두미도(五斗米道)**의 수장으로, 독특한 방식으로 한중을 20여 년간 통치했습니다. 백성들에게 세금 대신 쌀 닷 되(五斗米)를 받았고, 굶주린 여행자에게 무료로 음식을 제공하는 의사(義舍)를 운영했어요. 완벽하진 않았지만, 백성들의 삶은 비교적 안정돼 있었죠.

익주를 완전히 장악한 유비는 곧바로 한중을 노립니다. 제갈량은 후방에서 군수물자를 조달하며 전쟁을 지원했고, 유비는 직접 대군을 이끌고 북진했어요. 이 전쟁은 유비의 전쟁 인생에서 가장 중요한 싸움이었습니다. 한중을 얻으면 익주가 안전해지고, 더 나아가 북벌(北伐)의 발판도 마련되거든요.

조조도 이 싸움의 중요성을 알았어요. 직접 대군을 이끌고 한중으로 내려왔죠. 양쪽 모두 물러설 수 없는 싸움이었습니다.

한중 쟁탈전에서 가장 극적인 장면은 정군산(定軍山) 전투예요. 조조의 핵심 장수 **하후연(夏侯淵)**이 정군산을 지키고 있었는데, 유비 진영에서 이 요충지를 빼앗기 위해 나선 인물이 바로 **황충(黃忠)**이었어요.

황충은 이미 나이가 60을 훌쩍 넘은 노장이었어요. 그런데 이 노인이 정군산에서 기적 같은 활약을 펼칩니다. 제갈량의 전략에 따라 황충은 하후연의 군대가 허술해진 틈을 노려 전광석화처럼 기습을 감행했고, 하후연을 직접 베어 죽였어요.

하후연은 조조가 가장 아끼는 장수 중 하나였어요. 그의 전사 소식을 들은 조조는 크게 탄식했다고 해요.

"하후연이 죽다니 — 이는 전쟁을 잃은 것과 같다."

정군산을 잃은 조조군은 급격히 사기가 꺾였고, 전선 전체가 흔들리기 시작했습니다.

조자룡의 담력 — 빈 영채로 적을 물리치다

한중 전투에서 **조자룡(趙雲)**의 활약도 빠질 수 없어요. 한번은 조조군이 갑자기 대규모로 쳐들어오자, 조자룡은 오히려 영채의 문을 활짝 열고 깃발을 내린 채 홀로 진영 앞에 말을 세웠어요. 조조군은 안에 매복이 있을 거라 의심해 감히 들어오지 못하고 물러났죠. 조자룡은 이 기지로 유비 진영을 지켜냈습니다.

유비는 이 소식을 듣고 이렇게 말했어요.

"자룡은 온몸이 담력이로구나(子龍一身是膽)."

담력 하나로 대군을 물리쳤다는 이 장면은, 조자룡이 단순한 무장이 아니라 냉철한 판단력을 가진 장수였음을 보여줍니다.

닭갈비와 조조의 퇴각

한중 전투가 길어지면서 조조는 점점 지쳐갔어요. 진격도 퇴각도 결정하지 못하던 어느 날 저녁, 조조는 닭갈비(鷄肋)로 저녁을 먹다가 그걸 그날 밤의 군호(軍號)로 삼았어요. 이를 들은 조조의 참모 **양수(楊修)**는 즉시 짐을 싸기 시작했죠.

"닭갈비는 먹기엔 살이 없고, 버리기엔 아깝습니다. 이건 철군하겠다는 뜻입니다."

양수의 해석은 정확했어요. 조조는 곧 한중에서 퇴각을 결정합니다. 하지만 조조는 양수가 자신의 속마음을 너무 쉽게 읽는다는 이유로 그를 처형하고 말았어요. 뛰어난 재주가 오히려 목숨을 앗아간 비극이었죠.

유비, 한중왕을 선포하다

조조가 물러나고 한중을 차지한 유비는 219년, 마침내 **한중왕(漢中王)**을 선포합니다. 신하들이 올린 표문에는 관우·장비·조자룡·마초·황충 등 다섯 명의 명장이 **오호대장군(五虎大將軍)**으로 나란히 이름을 올렸어요. 삼국지 팬이라면 누구나 아는 그 유명한 다섯 명이죠.

유비의 선포는 단순한 왕위 취득이 아니었어요. 한나라 황실의 후손으로서 무너진 나라를 다시 세우겠다는 명분의 선언이기도 했습니다. 조조가 사실상의 황제 노릇을 하는 상황에서, 유비는 정통 한나라의 계승자를 자처한 거예요.

Episode 12. Seize the Throat of the Realm — The Battle of Hanzhong and the Head-On Clash of Liu Bei and Cao Cao

In 219 AD, one of the most fiercely contested territorial battles of the entire Three Kingdoms era plays out. The prize: Hanzhong (漢中) — a basin wedged between the Qinling and Daba mountain ranges in what is now southern Shaanxi. Hanzhong wasn't just real estate. It was the strategic linchpin connecting Cao Cao's northern heartland to Liu Bei's Yi Province in the south. Hold Hanzhong, and Yi Province was safe. Lose it, and Yi Province was exposed. Neither side could afford to walk away.

The Previous Owner — Zhang Lu

Before the great powers collided over Hanzhong, it was governed by Zhang Lu (張魯) — the leader of a Taoist religious community called the Five Pecks of Rice movement (五斗米道). Zhang Lu had run Hanzhong for over twenty years in an unusual way: instead of heavy taxation, he asked followers for five pecks of rice, and he maintained roadside shelters where hungry travelers could eat for free. It wasn't a perfect system, but the people lived relatively stable lives.

In 215 AD, Cao Cao personally led a massive army into Hanzhong. Zhang Lu resisted, then surrendered. Hanzhong passed into Cao Cao's hands — and the collision with Liu Bei became inevitable.

Liu Bei Pushes North

With Yi Province fully secured, Liu Bei immediately set his sights on Hanzhong. Zhuge Liang managed the rear — coordinating supplies and logistics — while Liu Bei personally commanded the advance north. This was the most important campaign of his military career. Win Hanzhong, and Yi Province was secure. Win Hanzhong, and the road for a future northern expedition opened up.

Cao Cao understood the stakes just as well. He came south himself with a massive force. Both men knew this wasn't a battle either of them could afford to lose.

Huang Zhong's Miracle — The Battle of Mount Dingjun

The single most dramatic moment of the Hanzhong campaign came at Mount Dingjun (定軍山). Cao Cao's trusted general Xiahou Yuan (夏侯淵) was holding the mountain — a critical position. The man Liu Bei sent to take it was Huang Zhong (黃忠).

Huang Zhong was past sixty years old. And he delivered one of the most stunning performances of the entire war. Following Zhuge Liang's tactical guidance, Huang Zhong waited for the precise moment when Xiahou Yuan's forces were stretched and off guard — then launched a lightning strike. He personally cut Xiahou Yuan down in the fighting.

Xiahou Yuan was one of Cao Cao's most valued commanders. When the news reached him, Cao Cao reportedly said:

"Xiahou Yuan is dead — this is as good as losing the war."

With Mount Dingjun gone and one of his best generals dead, the morale of Cao Cao's entire force began to crack.

Zhao Yun's Nerve — An Empty Camp Repels an Army

Zhao Yun (趙雲) also had his moment in the Hanzhong campaign. When a large Cao Cao force suddenly descended on his position, Zhao Yun made a counterintuitive call: he threw the camp gates wide open, took down the flags and banners, and sat alone on horseback in front of the entrance.

Cao Cao's commanders, convinced it was a trap with an ambush waiting inside, pulled back rather than advance. Zhao Yun had bought time and saved the position through sheer nerve.

When Liu Bei heard what had happened, he said:

"Zhao Yun — that man is made entirely of courage (子龍一身是膽)."

It's a line that's followed Zhao Yun across 1,800 years of retelling.

Chicken Ribs and Cao Cao's Retreat

As the campaign dragged on, Cao Cao found himself stuck — unable to advance meaningfully, unwilling to retreat. One evening, eating chicken ribs for dinner, he used the word "chicken ribs" (鷄肋) as that night's military password.

His advisor Yang Xiu (楊修) heard it and immediately started packing his belongings.

"Chicken ribs — too little meat to be worth eating, too wasteful to throw away. He's decided to pull back."

Yang Xiu read it exactly right. Cao Cao shortly ordered the withdrawal from Hanzhong. But he also had Yang Xiu executed — for the crime of reading his mind too easily, too often. It was the kind of fate that brilliant men sometimes met when they served brilliant rulers who didn't like being outthought.

Liu Bei Declares Himself King of Hanzhong

With Cao Cao gone and Hanzhong secured, Liu Bei proclaimed himself King of Hanzhong (漢中王) in 219 AD. In the document submitted by his officers, five generals were named as the supreme commanders of Shu's military forces — Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, and Huang Zhong. History would come to call them the Five Tiger Generals (五虎大將軍). Every Three Kingdoms fan knows that list.

The proclamation was more than a title. As a descendant of the Han imperial family, Liu Bei was declaring himself the legitimate heir of the Han Dynasty — the rightful restoration of what Cao Cao had hollowed out. In the face of a man who had the emperor as his puppet, Liu Bei was planting his flag as the true continuation of the dynasty.

Closing

With Hanzhong secured, Shu Han reached its high-water mark. Solid territory spanning Yi Province and Hanzhong. Zhuge Liang at the helm of strategy. The Five Tiger Generals at the peak of their power. Everything seemed to be in place. But at this exact moment, Guan Yu was crumbling in Jing Province. The greatest triumph and the most devastating tragedy arrived at the same time.
