1. Basic Chat Acronyms | 기본 채팅 약어
1-1. LOL – Laughing Out Loud
EN “I’m laughing a lot.” Used when something is funny.
KO 너무 웃길 때 쓰는 표현. “ㅋㅋㅋ”, “빵 터짐” 느낌.
Ex LOL, that video was so funny!
1-2. BRB – Be Right Back
EN I’ll be back soon.
KO 잠깐 자리를 비울 때 “금방 올게”라는 의미.
Ex BRB, I need some coffee.
1-3. BTW – By The Way
EN Used when you add something to the conversation: “by the way…”.
KO “그런데, 그러고 보니” 하고 말을 덧붙일 때.
Ex BTW, did you see my new post?
1-4. FYI – For Your Information
EN Just so you know; for your reference.
KO “참고로 알려 드리면요” 라는 느낌.
Ex FYI, the meeting starts at 2 PM.
1-5. ASAP – As Soon As Possible
EN As quickly as you can.
KO 가능한 한 빨리, 최대한 서둘러 달라는 의미.
Ex Please reply ASAP.
1-6. IDK – I Don’t Know
EN I don’t know.
KO “몰라”를 짧게 줄인 표현.
Ex IDK what he means.
1-7. NVM – Never Mind
EN Forget it; it’s not important anymore.
KO “아 됐어, 신경 쓰지 마”라는 뜻.
Ex NVM, I already fixed it.
1-8. IMO / IMHO – In My (Humble) Opinion
EN In my opinion; I think…
KO “내 생각에는”, “개인적으로는” 정도의 의미.
Ex IMO, that movie was overrated.
2. SNS & Online Slang | SNS·온라인 속어
2-1. DM – Direct Message
EN A private message sent on social media.
KO 인스타, X(트위터) 등에서 보내는 비공개 메시지. “디엠”이라고 발음.
Ex DM me the details, please.
2-2. TBH – To Be Honest
EN To be honest; honestly speaking.
KO “솔직히 말하면”의 느낌.
Ex TBH, I didn’t like the ending.
2-3. FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out
EN The feeling that you might miss something fun or important.
KO 나만 빼고 뭔가 재밌는 일이 벌어지는 것 같아 불안한 마음, “소외될까 봐 두려움”.
Ex I get FOMO when I see everyone traveling.
2-4. OOTD – Outfit Of The Day
EN The clothes you’re wearing today (often for photos on SNS).
KO “오늘의 코디/패션”을 올릴 때 쓰는 말.
Ex Posting my OOTD on Instagram.
2-5. TMI – Too Much Information
EN You shared more personal detail than needed.
KO 너무 자세한 정보, 듣기 버거운 사적인 얘기를 했을 때 “TMI야~”.
Ex That was a bit TMI, don’t you think?
3. Funny Slang | 재밌는 인터넷 슬랭
3-1. ROFL – Rolling On the Floor Laughing
EN I’m laughing so hard I could roll on the floor.
KO 너무 웃겨서 바닥을 구를 정도라는 과장된 표현. “완전 빵 터짐”.
Ex ROFL, that meme killed me.
3-2. LMAO – Laughing My Ass Off
EN I’m laughing so much; this is hilarious.
KO 엄청나게 웃긴 상황에서 쓰는 표현. (약간 강한 표현이라 친한 사이에서 사용).
Ex LMAO, you’re so funny!
3-3. AF – As F*** (강조 표현)
EN Used to strongly emphasize an adjective (very, extremely).
KO “정말, 엄청”의 느낌. 다만 욕이 섞인 표현이므로 사용에 주의.
Ex It’s cold AF today.
3-4. SUS – Suspicious
EN Suspicious; something feels off or shady.
KO 뭔가 수상하고 찜찜할 때 “수상한데, 구린데?”라는 의미.
Ex He’s acting kind of sus.
3-5. GOAT – Greatest Of All Time
EN The best person ever in a field (sports, music, etc.).
KO “역대급 최고”, “전설” 같은 의미.
Ex Michael Jordan is the GOAT.
3-6. Flex
EN To show off, to brag about something (money, skills, etc.).
KO 비싼 물건, 능력을 과시하다, 자랑하다는 의미.
Ex He’s always flexing his new gadgets.
3-7. No cap
EN No lie; I’m serious.
KO “진짜로, 거짓말 아니고” 하는 느낌의 강조 표현.
Ex That’s the best cake I’ve ever had, no cap.
4. Gaming Slang | 게임에서 쓰는 약어
4-1. GG – Good Game
EN Good game; used at the end of a match, win or lose.
KO 게임 끝나고 예의로 하는 인사. “수고”, “즐겜” 느낌.
Ex GG everyone!
4-2. AFK – Away From Keyboard
EN The player is away and not controlling the game.
KO 키보드에서 떨어져 있는 상태, “잠수 중”.
Ex Don’t attack now, our healer is AFK.
4-3. OP – Overpowered
EN Too strong, unbalanced (character, weapon, etc.).
KO 너무 강해서 “사기 캐릭”, “밸붕”이라고 할 때.
Ex That character is so OP, it needs a nerf.
4-4. Nerf / Buff
EN Nerf: to make something weaker; Buff: to make something stronger.
KO Nerf는 “능력 하향”, Buff는 “능력 상향”.
Ex They nerfed that skill and buffed the healer.
5. Tech & Internet Terms | 기술·인터넷 관련 약어
5-1. ISP – Internet Service Provider
EN A company that provides Internet access (e.g., KT, SK Broadband, Comcast).
KO 집이나 회사에 인터넷 회선을 제공하는 통신사·인터넷 업체.
5-2. URL – Uniform Resource Locator
EN The address of a web page (e.g., https://example.com).
KO 웹 페이지에 접속하기 위한 인터넷 주소.
5-3. VPN – Virtual Private Network
EN A service that encrypts your connection and hides your IP address.
KO 인터넷 연결을 암호화하고 IP를 숨겨 주는 가상 사설망 서비스.
5-4. UI / UX – User Interface / User Experience
EN UI is how something looks; UX is how it feels to use it.
KO UI는 화면·버튼의 겉모습 디자인, UX는 사용자가 느끼는 경험·편의성.
6. Culture & Relationship Slang | 관계·문화 관련 표현
6-1. Ghosting
EN Suddenly stopping all contact with someone without explanation.
KO 아무 말 없이 연락을 완전히 끊어버리는 것, “잠수 이별” 느낌.
Ex He just stopped replying. Total ghosting.
6-2. Catfish
EN Someone who pretends to be another person online (fake photos, fake identity).
KO 온라인에서 다른 사람이냐고 속이는 사람, 가짜 프로필로 사기 치는 경우.
Ex He was catfished by someone using fake photos.
6-3. Troll
EN A person who intentionally causes arguments or problems online.
KO 댓글로 싸움을 걸고 분란을 일으키는 사람, “악플러·트롤”.
Ex Don’t feed the trolls.
6-4. Karen
EN A slang term for a rude, entitled person who complains a lot, especially to staff.
KO 과하게 요구하고 끊임없이 불평하는 사람을 비꼬는 말. (이름에서 유래한 속어).
Ex She complained to the manager about everything. Such a Karen.
6-5. Spill the tea
EN Tell me the gossip; share the juicy story.
KO “자, 썰 풀어봐”, “무슨 일이 있었는지 말해봐”라는 의미.
Ex You said something happened yesterday. Spill the tea!
