Conjunctions — The Logic Between Clauses

문장과 문장 사이에는 논리가 있습니다. 앞 문장이 원인이면 뒤 문장은 결과입니다. 앞 문장이 조건이면 뒤 문장은 그 조건이 충족됐을 때 일어나는 일입니다. 이 논리적 관계를 표현하는 단어가 접속사(conjunction)입니다.

토익 Part 5에서 접속사 문제는 두 절 사이의 의미 관계를 정확히 파악해야 풀 수 있습니다. 단어 뜻보다 앞뒤 문장의 논리 흐름을 읽는 것이 핵심입니다.

 

접속사의 두 종류 · Coordinating vs. Subordinating

영어 접속사는 크게 두 가지로 나뉩니다. 두 절을 대등하게 연결하는 등위접속사와, 한 절이 다른 절에 종속되는 관계를 만드는 종속접속사입니다.

등위접속사 · Coordinating

두 절을 대등하게 연결. 앞뒤 절이 같은 비중을 가집니다. 쉼표 뒤에 오는 경우가 많습니다.

and, but, or, so, yet, for, nor

종속접속사 · Subordinating

한 절이 다른 절에 의미적으로 종속됩니다. 시간·조건·이유·양보를 나타냅니다.

although, because, if, when, while, unless, since, even though

once	~하고 나면, 일단 ~하면	시간·조건	Once the contract is signed, we will proceed.
so that	~하기 위해서	목적	We updated the system so that users can log in easily.
as long as	~하는 한	조건	As long as demand continues, we will keep producing.

although vs. despite · 양보 표현

although

접속사 — 뒤에 주어+동사(절)

Although the price was high, we ordered it.

despite

전치사 — 뒤에 명사(구)

Despite the high price, we ordered it.

because vs. because of · 이유 표현

because

접속사 — 뒤에 주어+동사(절)

Because the system failed, work stopped.

because of

전치사 — 뒤에 명사(구)

Because of the system failure, work stopped.

if vs. unless · 조건 표현

if

만약 ~라면 (긍정 조건)

If you confirm today, we will hold the seat.

unless

~하지 않으면 (부정 조건)

Unless you confirm today, we cannot hold the seat.

while vs. during · 시간 표현

while

접속사 — 뒤에 주어+동사(절)

While he was traveling, she managed the office.

during

전치사 — 뒤에 명사(구)

During his trip, she managed the office.

📌 접속사 문제 풀이 전략

1. 앞뒤 절의 논리 관계를 먼저 파악한다. 양보·이유·조건·대조·목적 중 어느 것인지 결정합니다.
2. 빈칸 뒤가 절(주어+동사)인지, 명사(구)인지 확인한다. 절이면 접속사, 명사(구)면 전치사를 씁니다.
   although + 절 / despite + 명사구
3. although와 even though는 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 의미와 구조가 동일합니다.
4. unless = if ~ not. unless 뒤에 부정어(not)를 다시 쓰지 않도록 주의합니다.

세 문장 모두 다른 접속사를 씁니다. although는 양보, once는 시간과 조건, if는 조건을 나타냅니다. 접속사 하나가 문장의 논리 전체를 결정합니다.
