200년, 조조는 벼랑 끝에 서 있었어요.

앞에는 원소의 70만 대군. 뒤에는 바닥나가는 군량. 옆에는 언제 등 돌릴지 모르는 신하들.

그리고 조조의 군대는 고작 7만이었어요.

누가 봐도 지는 싸움이었어요. 근데 조조는 싸웠어요. 그리고 이겼어요.

도대체 어떻게요. 오늘은 그 이야기예요.

원소라는 사람

먼저 원소를 알아야 해요.

원소는 당시 누가 봐도 천하의 주인이 될 사람이었어요.

명문가 출신에 얼굴도 잘생겼고, 말도 잘했어요. 사람들이 알아서 몰려들었어요. 북방 네 개 주를 차지했고, 군대는 조조의 열 배가 넘었어요.

근데 딱 하나 문제가 있었어요.

자기 말만 들었어요.

참모 전풍이 말했어요. "지금 싸우면 안 됩니다. 조조 군은 적어도 정예예요. 시간을 끌면 우리가 유리합니다."

원소는 전풍을 감옥에 가뒀어요.

또 다른 참모 저수가 말했어요. "군량이 먼저 떨어지는 쪽이 집니다. 우리가 기다려야 해요."

원소는 저수를 무시했어요.

뛰어난 참모를 두 명이나 가지고 있으면서 둘 다 안 들었어요. 이미 여기서 전투의 결과가 반쯤 정해진 거예요.

조조의 진짜 위기

조조라고 여유 있었던 건 아니에요.

관도에서 버티는 동안 군량이 바닥을 보이기 시작했어요. 병사들은 지쳤어요. 언제 무너져도 이상하지 않았어요.

조조가 후방의 순욱에게 편지를 보냈어요.

"솔직히 더 못 버티겠다. 그냥 허도로 물러나는 게 낫지 않겠나."

이건 조조가 거의 포기하기 직전이라는 신호였어요. 조조가 이런 편지를 쓸 사람이 아니거든요.

순욱이 답했어요.

"지금 물러서면 끝입니다. 원소도 모든 걸 걸었어요. 조금만 더요. 반드시 틈이 생깁니다."

조조는 이를 악물었어요.

그리고 정말로 틈이 생겼어요. 예상치 못한 방향으로요.

밤중에 찾아온 손님

어느 날 밤, 조조 진영에 낯선 사람이 찾아왔어요.

원소의 참모 허유였어요.

허유는 원소의 오랜 친구이자 핵심 참모였어요. 그런 사람이 한밤중에 적진으로 걸어 들어왔어요.

이유는 단순했어요. 원소가 자기 가족을 억울하게 처벌했거든요. 배신감과 분노가 충성심을 이긴 거예요.

허유가 왔다는 보고를 받은 조조, 어떻게 했을까요.

맨발로 뛰어나왔어요.

천하를 호령하는 조조가 신발도 못 챙기고 뛰어나왔어요. 그만큼 절박했던 거예요. 그리고 그만큼 기회를 알아봤던 거예요.

허유가 말했어요.

"원소의 군량이 전부 오소에 있소. 거기 지키는 병력은 많지 않아요."

조조의 눈빛이 달라졌어요.

조조, 직접 간다

보통 이런 경우 장수를 보내요.

근데 조조는 직접 갔어요.

5천 명의 정예 기병을 이끌고 밤에 출발했어요. 원소 군의 깃발을 들고, 원소 군의 갑옷을 입고요.

가다가 검문에 걸렸어요.

"어디서 오는 군대요?"

조조 군이 태연하게 답했어요.

"원소 장군 명으로 오소 지원 가는 길이오."

통과했어요.

또 검문.

또 통과.

그렇게 아무도 모르게 오소에 도착했어요.

불을 질렀어요.

원소의 군량 기지 전체가 불길에 휩싸였어요. 하늘이 붉게 물들었어요.

그 빛이 멀리 관도의 두 진영에서도 보였어요.

오소가 불탄다

원소에게 보고가 올라왔어요.

"오소가 불타고 있습니다!"

참모들이 외쳤어요.

"지금 당장 대군을 돌려 오소를 구해야 합니다!"

근데 원소는 고개를 저었어요.

"오소는 놔두고 조조의 본진을 치면 돼. 본진이 무너지면 오소는 저절로 해결되잖아."

치명적인 오판이었어요.

장합과 고람이 조조의 관도 본진을 공격했어요. 근데 본진은 견고했어요. 뚫리지 않았어요.

그 사이 오소는 완전히 잿더미가 됐어요.

앞도 막혔고, 뒤도 타버렸어요.

장합과 고람은 전세를 읽었어요. 그리고 조조에게 항복했어요.

원소의 70만 대군이 한순간에 무너지기 시작했어요.

800명

원소는 도망쳤어요.

황하를 건널 때 곁에 남은 사람이 800명이었어요.

70만 데리고 온 사람이 800명만 데리고 돌아갔어요.

원소는 그 충격을 끝내 이겨내지 못했어요. 2년 뒤 피를 토하며 세상을 떠났어요.

그리고 감옥에 있던 전풍에게 누군가 소식을 전했어요.

"당신 말이 맞았소. 이제 풀려날 거요."

전풍이 쓸쓸히 웃었어요.

"원소 공은 내가 옳았다는 걸 알면 오히려 나를 더 부끄러워할 거요. 살아남기 어렵겠소."

그 말 그대로 됐어요. 원소는 돌아오자마자 전풍을 처형했어요.

옳은 말을 했다는 이유로 죽은 사람이었어요.

편지를 태운 조조

조조가 원소의 진영을 접수했어요.

문서함을 열었더니 편지가 쏟아졌어요.

조조 진영 사람들이 원소에게 몰래 보낸 밀서들이었어요. 원소가 이기면 내가 돕겠다, 나는 원소 편이다, 그런 내용들이었어요.

신하들이 말했어요.

"명단을 뽑아 역적들을 처단해야 합니다."

조조는 편지를 전부 불 속에 던졌어요.

"원소가 그렇게 강할 때는 나도 내 앞날을 몰랐다. 다른 사람들이야 오죽했겠나."

그 한마디였어요.

그날 그 불길 앞에서, 수많은 사람들이 조조를 새롭게 봤을 거예요.

관도대전이 남긴 것

7만이 70만을 이겼어요.

근데 이건 기적이 아니었어요.

원소는 이길 수 있는 싸움을 스스로 망쳤어요. 좋은 참모들의 말을 무시했고, 결정적인 순간에 오판했어요.

조조는 벼랑 끝에서도 포기하지 않았어요. 참모의 말을 들었고, 단 하나의 기회가 왔을 때 직접 뛰어들었어요.

전쟁은 숫자가 아니에요.

어떤 말을 듣고, 어떤 선택을 하느냐예요.

그리고 가장 무서운 적은 적군이 아닐 때도 있어요.

내 판단을 믿어버리는 나 자신일 때도 있어요.

원소가 그걸 증명했어요. 역사에 이름을 남기는 방식으로요.

Season 3 — Battle Deep Dives

Episode 1: The Battle of Guandu — The Night That Changed the Realm

 

In the year 200 AD, Cao Cao was standing at the edge of a cliff.

In front of him: Yuan Shao's army of 700,000. Behind him: supply lines running dry. Around him: advisors he wasn't sure he could trust.

And his own army? Seventy thousand men.

Every rational calculation said he should lose. He fought anyway. And he won.

How? That's today's story.

The Problem with Yuan Shao

To understand Guandu, you have to understand Yuan Shao.

By every visible measure, Yuan Shao looked like the man destiny had chosen.

Born into the most powerful aristocratic family in the land. Handsome. Silver-tongued. People flocked to him without being asked. He controlled four northern provinces, and his army outnumbered Cao Cao's by ten to one.

But he had one fatal habit.

He only listened to himself.

His advisor Tian Feng said: "Don't attack yet. Cao Cao's army is small but elite. Time is on our side."

Yuan Shao threw Tian Feng in prison.

Another advisor, Ju Shou, said: "Whoever runs out of food first loses. We should wait."

Yuan Shao ignored him completely.

Two brilliant advisors. Listened to neither. The outcome of the battle was already half-decided before a single sword was drawn.

Cao Cao's Real Crisis

Don't mistake this for Cao Cao sitting comfortably on the other side.

As the standoff at Guandu dragged on, his supplies began to run out. His soldiers were exhausted. The whole thing could have collapsed at any moment.

Cao Cao wrote to his advisor Xun Yu back at the capital.

"I honestly can't hold on much longer. Wouldn't it make more sense to pull back to Xuchang?"

For Cao Cao to write something like this — the man was close to the breaking point.

Xun Yu wrote back:

"If you retreat now, it's over. Yuan Shao has staked everything on this. You have to do the same. The crack will come."

Cao Cao gritted his teeth.

And the crack came. From a direction no one expected.

The Visitor in the Night

One night, a stranger walked into Cao Cao's camp.

Xu You — one of Yuan Shao's closest advisors.

This was a man who had served Yuan Shao for years, someone near the very center of his operation. And he was standing in the enemy camp in the middle of the night.

Why? Yuan Shao had punished Xu You's family on flimsy grounds. The betrayal of trust was more than the loyalty could hold.

When Cao Cao heard Xu You had arrived — he ran out to meet him.

Without his shoes.

The man who commanded the north, sprinting out barefoot. That's how desperate things were. And that's how quickly he recognized what this moment meant.

Xu You said:

"Yuan Shao's entire grain supply is stored at Wuchao. The garrison there is thin."

Something shifted in Cao Cao's eyes.

Cao Cao Goes Himself

The normal move would be to send a general.

Cao Cao went himself.

Five thousand elite cavalry, moving through the night. Flying Yuan Shao's banners. Wearing Yuan Shao's colors.

They hit a checkpoint.

"Who are you?"

"Reinforcements sent by General Yuan Shao. Heading to Wuchao."

Waved through.

Another checkpoint.

Waved through again.

They reached Wuchao without raising a single alarm.

Then they lit it up.

Yuan Shao's entire supply depot went up in a roar of flame. The sky turned red. That light was visible from both camps back at Guandu — miles away.

The Fire at Wuchao

The report reached Yuan Shao.

"Wuchao is burning."

His advisors shouted:

"Turn the main army around. We have to save Wuchao now!"

Yuan Shao shook his head.

"Leave Wuchao. Strike Cao Cao's main camp instead. If his base falls, everything else resolves itself."

It was the worst possible read of the situation.

Zhang He and Gao Lan attacked Cao Cao's fortified position at Guandu. It didn't break.

Meanwhile, Wuchao finished burning.

Cut off in front, burned out from behind — Zhang He and Gao Lan read the collapse coming and surrendered to Cao Cao.

Yuan Shao's 700,000-man army began to disintegrate.

Eight Hundred

Yuan Shao fled.

When he crossed the Yellow River, eight hundred men were with him.

He had arrived with 700,000. He left with eight hundred.

He never recovered. Two years later, Yuan Shao died — coughing up blood, the histories say, consumed by grief and humiliation.

Back in his prison cell, Tian Feng heard the news.

Someone said to him:

"You were right about everything. Surely you'll be released now."

Tian Feng smiled faintly.

"Yuan Shao will be too ashamed that I was right. He won't be able to keep me alive."

He was exactly right. Yuan Shao returned and had him executed.

He died for having told the truth.

The Letters Cao Cao Burned

When Cao Cao took Yuan Shao's camp, he opened the document chest.

Letters poured out.

Secret correspondence from people inside Cao Cao's own court — promising loyalty to Yuan Shao, pledging to switch sides if he won.

His officers said:

"We have to identify every name on these letters and make examples of them."

Cao Cao threw every single letter into the fire.

"When Yuan Shao was at his peak, even I didn't know which way things would go. How could I hold it against anyone else?"

That was all he said.

Standing in front of that fire, watching a year's worth of betrayals turn to ash — something about Cao Cao became clearer to a great many people that day.

What Guandu Tells Us

Seventy thousand defeated 700,000.

But this wasn't a miracle. It wasn't even that surprising, once you look closely.

Yuan Shao took a winning hand and destroyed it himself. He had the right advisors and refused to hear them. He had every advantage and threw it away in a single moment of misplaced confidence.

Cao Cao was against the wall — and held. He listened to the people around him. And when the one opening appeared, he didn't send someone else. He rode through the night himself.

War isn't arithmetic.

It's what you do with the advice you're given. It's the choice you make in the one moment that counts.

And sometimes the most dangerous enemy isn't standing across the battlefield.

It's the voice inside your head that says you already know the answer.

Yuan Shao proved that. In a way that history never forgot.
