유비의 인생에서 가장 통쾌한 순간이 언제냐고 물으면, 저는 한중대전이라고 말할 거예요.

관도에서 조조에게 쫓겼어요. 장판파에서 목숨만 건졌어요. 형주를 빌린 뒤 돌려달라는 소리를 들었어요.

수십 년을 지고 또 지던 유비가, 처음으로 조조와 정면으로 붙어서 이겼어요.

그것도 조조가 직접 나온 싸움에서요.

오늘은 그 이야기예요.

한중이 왜 중요한가

한중은 땅이에요. 지금의 중국 섬서성 남쪽, 사천 분지 바로 위에 있는 좁고 긴 땅이에요.

지도를 보면 한중이 왜 중요한지 바로 보여요.

익주, 그러니까 사천으로 들어가려면 한중을 거쳐야 해요. 한중을 막으면 사천을 지킬 수 있어요. 한중을 내주면 사천이 열려요.

유비가 익주를 손에 넣은 게 214년이었어요. 그런데 한중은 여전히 조조 손에 있었어요.

제갈량이 말했어요.

"익주는 집이에요. 한중은 그 집의 대문이에요. 대문을 남의 손에 두면 집을 지킬 수 없습니다."

유비는 한중을 가져오기로 했어요.

조조의 한중

조조가 한중을 얻은 건 215년이었어요.

한중의 주인 장로를 몰아내고 차지했어요. 근데 조조는 곧바로 북쪽으로 돌아갔어요.

왜였을까요.

사실 조조에게도 한중은 애매한 땅이었어요. 너무 멀었어요. 보급하기가 어려웠어요. 병력을 유지하려면 돈과 식량이 엄청나게 들었어요.

조조가 돌아가면서 남긴 사람이 하후연이었어요.

하후연은 조조 휘하 최고의 장수 중 하나였어요. 빠른 기동으로 유명했어요. 조조가 믿고 맡길 만한 사람이었어요.

근데 그 하후연이 이 싸움에서 죽어요.

전투 시작

217년, 유비가 움직였어요.

제갈량은 익주에 남아 후방을 지켰어요. 법정이 전선에서 유비의 참모 역할을 했어요.

법정이라는 사람을 잠깐 짚고 가야 해요.

원래 익주에서 유장 밑에 있던 사람이에요. 유비가 익주를 차지할 때 내부에서 도운 참모예요. 책략에 능했고, 눈치가 빨랐어요. 제갈량도 법정의 능력을 인정했어요.

유비와 법정의 콤비가 한중에서 제대로 맞아 들어갔어요.

초반 전투는 유비가 밀리는 모습이었어요. 하후연은 기동력을 살려 이곳저곳을 빠르게 치고 빠졌어요. 유비 군은 지형에 익숙하지 않았어요.

전선이 교착됐어요.

정군산

219년 초, 유비가 정군산으로 올라갔어요.

정군산은 한중 전체를 내려다볼 수 있는 요충지예요. 이걸 차지하면 한중의 흐름이 달라졌어요.

하후연이 맞섰어요.

유비의 노장 황충이 나섰어요.

황충은 당시 나이가 예순을 훌쩍 넘었어요. 근데 싸움은 누구보다 뜨거웠어요.

법정이 유리한 순간을 기다렸어요.

그 순간이 왔어요.

하후연이 진지 일부를 보수하러 군대를 나눴어요. 잠깐 대형이 흐트러진 순간이었어요.

법정이 외쳤어요.

"지금입니다!"

황충이 산 위에서 내달렸어요.

함성과 함께 하후연의 진영으로 돌진했어요.

하후연은 그 기습에 대응하지 못했어요.

조조 최고의 장수 중 하나가 그 자리에서 전사했어요.

조조, 직접 온다

하후연이 죽었다는 소식이 조조에게 전해졌어요.

조조가 직접 움직였어요.

대군을 이끌고 한중으로 내려왔어요. 이건 단순한 전투가 아니었어요. 조조가 직접 나온다는 건 이 싸움을 천하가 다 지켜본다는 뜻이었어요.

유비 진영이 술렁였어요.

조조의 본대가 왔어요. 어떻게 해야 하나.

유비가 말했어요.

"조조가 직접 왔어도 한중은 내놓지 않는다. 결국 물러나게 될 것이다."

그냥 큰소리가 아니었어요. 전략이 있었어요.

조조의 답답함

조조가 한중에 도착해서 보니 상황이 묘했어요.

유비 군은 높은 곳을 차지하고 내려오지 않았어요. 싸우러 나오지 않았어요. 그냥 버티고 있었어요.

조조가 공격했어요.

높은 곳에 있는 적을 치는 건 불리해요. 올라가는 쪽이 항상 손해예요. 조조 군의 피해가 컸어요.

그렇다고 그냥 기다리기에는 조조 군의 보급이 문제였어요. 멀리서 와서 오래 버티기가 어려웠어요.

유비가 버티면 버틸수록, 조조가 손해였어요.

그 사이 재미있는 장면이 하나 있어요.

조조 군이 어느 날 밥을 짓고 있었어요. 조자룡이 이끄는 소부대가 기습했어요. 조조 군이 놀라 흩어지자 조자룡이 진영 안으로 들어와 군량과 물자를 빼앗았어요.

조조가 직접 추격했어요.

조자룡은 도망치지 않았어요. 오히려 진영 문을 활짝 열고 북을 멈추고 조용히 기다렸어요.

빈 성 계략이었어요. 제갈량이 나중에 쓰는 것보다 먼저 조자룡이 써먹은 거예요.

조조는 함정인 줄 알고 물러났어요.

나중에 조자룡의 전과를 들은 유비가 말했어요.

"자룡은 온몸이 담이로다."

계륵

전선이 교착된 어느 날 밤, 조조의 막사에서 이상한 일이 있었어요.

석식으로 닭갈비 요리가 나왔어요. 조조는 한동안 닭갈비를 바라보다가 혼잣말을 했어요.

"계륵, 계륵."

닭의 갈비뼈. 먹을 게 없지만 버리기도 아까운 것.

그날 밤 부관 양수가 짐을 쌌어요.

동료들이 물었어요.

"왜 짐을 싸는 거요?"

양수가 말했어요.

"계륵이잖소. 먹자니 살이 없고 버리자니 아깝다. 한중이 지금 조공에게 딱 그 모양이에요. 곧 철수 명령이 내려질 거요."

정말로 며칠 뒤 조조는 철수 명령을 내렸어요.

양수는 결국 군심을 어지럽혔다는 이유로 처형됐어요. 너무 많이, 너무 정확하게 알아버린 사람의 비극이었어요.

한중은 유비의 것이 됐다

조조가 물러나고 한중은 유비의 손에 들어왔어요.

그 해 유비는 한중왕을 선언했어요.

짚신 팔던 사람이 왕이 됐어요.

유비가 가장 기뻐한 건 왕 자리가 아니었을 거예요. 조조와 정면으로 붙어서 이겼다는 것. 그게 더 컸을 거예요.

그리고 또 하나.

황충이 이 전투에서 하후연을 꺾으며 오호대장군 중 하나로 이름을 올렸어요. 나이 예순이 넘은 노장이 천하에 이름을 떨친 거예요.

늦었다고 생각하는 사람들에게 황충은 언제나 좋은 이야기예요.

한중대전이 남긴 것

한중대전은 유비 인생의 정점이었어요.

그리고 동시에 내리막의 시작이기도 했어요.

한중을 얻고 얼마 지나지 않아 관우가 형주에서 죽었어요. 유비는 복수를 위해 이릉으로 향했어요. 그 결과가 어떻게 됐는지는 다음 편에서 이야기할게요.

한중대전이 가르쳐 주는 건 이거예요.

조조처럼 강한 사람도 불리한 지형에서, 불리한 보급 상황에서, 버티는 상대를 이기기는 어렵다는 거예요.

때로는 화려하게 치고 나가는 것보다 유리한 자리를 잡고 버티는 게 더 강한 전략이에요.

산 위에서 내려오지 않은 유비처럼요.

Season 3 — Battle Deep Dives

Episode 3: The Battle of Hanzhong — The Fight Cao Cao Couldn't Win

 

If you had to pick the most satisfying moment in Liu Bei's entire life, I'd say Hanzhong.

He'd been chased by Cao Cao at Guandu. He'd barely escaped with his life at Changban. He'd borrowed Jing Province and spent years being asked to give it back.

Decades of losing, retreating, scraping by.

And then Liu Bei went head-to-head with Cao Cao — Cao Cao himself, in the field — and won.

That's today's story.

Why Hanzhong Mattered

Hanzhong is a strip of land sitting just north of the Sichuan basin, in what is now southern Shaanxi.

One look at a map and you understand everything.

If you want to enter Yi Province — modern Sichuan — you go through Hanzhong. Control Hanzhong and you protect Sichuan. Lose it, and Sichuan is wide open.

Liu Bei had taken Yi Province in 214 AD. But Hanzhong was still in Cao Cao's hands.

Zhuge Liang said it plainly:

"Yi Province is the house. Hanzhong is the front gate. You cannot defend the house if someone else holds the gate."

Liu Bei decided to take it back.

Cao Cao's Hanzhong

Cao Cao had taken Hanzhong in 215 AD, driving out its ruler Zhang Lu.

But he turned around and went north almost immediately.

Why? Because Hanzhong was a headache even for Cao Cao. Too far from his base. Supply lines stretched to their limit. Holding it required enormous money and grain.

He left behind Xiahou Yuan — one of his finest generals, known for lightning-fast movement. Someone Cao Cao trusted completely.

That same Xiahou Yuan dies in this battle.

The Campaign Begins

Liu Bei moved in 217 AD.

Zhuge Liang stayed in Yi Province to manage logistics. At the front, Liu Bei's key advisor was Fa Zheng.

Fa Zheng deserves a moment.

He'd originally served under Liu Zhang in Yi Province — and had helped Liu Bei take the region from the inside. Sharp, cunning, fast-thinking. Even Zhuge Liang acknowledged his ability.

The Liu Bei and Fa Zheng partnership was about to find its perfect stage.

Early on, the fighting didn't go well. Xiahou Yuan used his signature speed — striking fast, pulling back, striking somewhere else. Liu Bei's forces weren't yet comfortable with the terrain.

The front bogged down into a stalemate.

Mount Dingjun

In early 219 AD, Liu Bei moved toward Mount Dingjun.

This was the high ground that dominated the entire Hanzhong region. Whoever held it held everything.

Xiahou Yuan moved to defend it.

Liu Bei's veteran general Huang Zhong stepped forward.

Huang Zhong was well past sixty. But the fire in him burned as hot as anyone half his age.

Fa Zheng watched and waited for the right moment.

It came.

Xiahou Yuan split his forces to repair part of the defensive line — just for a moment, the formation broke apart.

Fa Zheng shouted:

"Now!"

Huang Zhong came charging down the mountain.

The war cry, the momentum, the surprise — Xiahou Yuan's lines had no time to respond.

One of Cao Cao's greatest generals fell on that hillside.

Cao Cao Comes Himself

Word reached Cao Cao. Xiahou Yuan was dead.

Cao Cao came personally.

He brought a full army south to Hanzhong. This wasn't just a military decision — when Cao Cao himself took the field, the entire realm was watching.

Liu Bei's camp felt the weight of it.

Liu Bei said:

"Even with Cao Cao here, Hanzhong stays ours. He'll leave in the end."

That wasn't bravado. It was strategy.

Cao Cao's Frustration

When Cao Cao arrived and surveyed the situation, something felt off.

Liu Bei's forces had taken the high ground everywhere. They weren't coming down. They weren't engaging. They were just sitting up there, waiting.

Cao Cao attacked uphill.

Attacking uphill is always costly. The losses mounted. And the longer things dragged on, the worse Cao Cao's supply situation became — his army had marched a long way from home, and feeding them in these mountains was brutal.

Every day Liu Bei held out, Cao Cao was bleeding.

There's a wonderful scene from this period.

One day, Cao Cao's men were cooking their evening meal when a small force under Zhao Yun hit them in a surprise raid. As Cao Cao's soldiers scattered in confusion, Zhao Yun rode straight into the camp and made off with supplies and equipment.

Cao Cao gave chase personally.

Zhao Yun didn't run. He swung back, flung the gates of his own camp wide open, silenced the war drums, and waited quietly.

The empty fort stratagem — the same trick Zhuge Liang would later become famous for. Zhao Yun did it first.

Cao Cao stared at the open gates, suspected a trap, and pulled back.

When Liu Bei heard the report later, he said:

"Zilong is courage from head to toe."

Chicken Ribs

The stalemate dragged on.

One night in Cao Cao's tent, the evening meal was served. The dish: braised chicken.

Cao Cao picked up a piece of the rib — the part with almost no meat — and turned it over in his hands. He stared at it for a long moment.

Then he murmured to himself:

"Ji lei. Ji lei."

Chicken ribs. Meat too scarce to bother eating. Too wasteful to throw away.

That night, his aide Yang Xiu began packing his belongings.

The other officers looked at him.

"What are you doing?"

Yang Xiu said:

"Chicken ribs. There's nothing here worth having, but leaving feels like a waste. That's exactly what Hanzhong looks like to the Chancellor right now. Withdrawal orders are coming."

A few days later, Cao Cao ordered the retreat.

Yang Xiu was eventually executed — for spreading confusion through the ranks, the official reason said. The real reason was probably simpler: he understood Cao Cao too well, too often, and said it out loud.

Some kinds of intelligence are dangerous to their owner.

Hanzhong Becomes Liu Bei's

With Cao Cao gone, Hanzhong was Liu Bei's.

That year, Liu Bei declared himself King of Hanzhong.

The man who had sold sandals was a king.

But I think what meant more to Liu Bei than the title was the fact itself — he had faced Cao Cao directly, in the open field, and won. After a lifetime of running, that was its own kind of arrival.

And one more thing worth noting.

Huang Zhong — the veteran who had cut down Xiahou Yuan on that hillside — earned his place among the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han through this campaign. A man past sixty, making his name heard across the realm.

For anyone who has ever thought they started too late, Huang Zhong is always a good story.

What Hanzhong Tells Us

Hanzhong was the peak of Liu Bei's life.

And also, quietly, the beginning of the descent.

Not long after taking Hanzhong, Guan Yu died in Jing Province. Liu Bei would chase revenge all the way to Yiling — and what happened there is next week's story.

But Hanzhong itself teaches something worth keeping.

Even someone as powerful as Cao Cao couldn't dislodge an opponent who held better ground, controlled the supplies, and simply refused to come down.

Sometimes the strongest move isn't the aggressive one.

Sometimes it's finding the high ground and staying there.

Liu Bei understood that. At least at Hanzhong, he did.
