기원전 428년경, 아테네의 한 귀족 가문에서 태어난 플라톤의 본명은 아리스토클레스였다. '플라톤'이라는 이름은 별명이었는데, 그리스어로 '넓다'는 뜻의 platos에서 유래했다. 어깨가 넓었기 때문이라는 설도 있고, 이마가 넓었기 때문이라는 설도 있다. 심지어 레슬링 선수로 활동했다는 기록도 남아있다.
그는 아테네 최고의 귀족 가문 출신이었다. 어머니 페릭티오네는 유명한 입법자 솔론의 후손이었고, 아버지 아리스톤은 아테네 왕가의 혈통을 이었다. 당시 귀족 청년에게 주어진 길은 분명했다 — 정치였다.

Born around 428 BC into one of Athens' most distinguished aristocratic families, Plato's birth name was Aristocles. The name "Plato" was a nickname, derived from the Greek word platos, meaning "broad." Some say it referred to his broad shoulders, others to his wide forehead. There are even records suggesting he competed as a wrestler in his youth.
His family background was impeccable. His mother, Perictione, was a descendant of the celebrated lawmaker Solon, and his father, Ariston, traced his lineage to the ancient kings of Athens. For a young man of such standing, the path forward was clear — politics.
The Man Who Changed Everything
And indeed, the young Plato had every intention of pursuing it. He had the family name, the intellect, the eloquence — everything needed to thrive at the center of Athenian democratic life. Then he met one man who changed everything.
Socrates.This peculiar old man — barefoot, wandering the streets of Athens, relentlessly questioning everyone he encountered — redirected the course of Plato's life the moment they met. Not toward politics, but toward philosophy.

The Birth of a Philosopher
Plato was around twenty years old when he first encountered Socrates. Eight years later, Socrates stood before an Athenian court, was sentenced to death, and quietly drank the hemlock.
That death was not merely a grief for Plato. It was a philosophical awakening. A world that condemned a man for pursuing truth — that was the world Plato resolved to spend his life challenging.
And so, an aristocratic youth became a philosopher.
